MoMA
MoMA design store, Barcelona

Founded in 1929, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in midtown Manhattan was the first museum devoted to the modern era. Today MoMA’s rich and varied collection offers a panoramic overview of modern and contemporary art, from the innovative European painting and sculpture of the 1880s to today's film, design, and performance art.  At The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1, they celebrate creativity, openness, tolerance, and generosity. They aim to be inclusive places—both onsite and online—where diverse cultural, artistic, social, and political positions are welcome.

The Solution

A place where art meets cultural activity. The store redefines the whole retail experience with a wide range of interactivity for kids and adults alike. With elements from The Big Apple incorporated to give Europeans the ambience of the busy taxi driven city, the space is not restricted to being a little store alone.

Mission statement, Vision and Value of the Brand

The MoMA design store, Barcelona offers you the best of New York and Barcelona. With different zones dedicated to both cities, each space offers customers a completely refreshing experience. The New York arena has a swanky ambience with sleek units and cabinets displaying jewellery, merchandise, small articles with precious metals,  and books, puzzles and games for kids. The immersive experience is at the end with the large interactive screens offering a variety of options from choosing to walk through the galleries of MoMA new York to creating your own customised art , printing them and gifting them. The Barcelona arena is a multi functional space that has swing stands that can be used to display new objects and the latest offerings and dismantled to free up space for various performing arts from local artists in Barcelona and neighbouring towns.

Defining User Experiences in the absence of the Museum

Layout, Zoning and Segregation of Services

The store is divided into 3 major zones, with each space designed for a specific purpose in a different style.
The New York Premium - This space predominantly contains gold and glass and is used to display delicate, exclusive products like jewellery.
The New York Contemporary - This space is generic and contains large white display cabinets throughout with some interactive elements incorporated.
Barcelona Exhibition - This space is the core of the store and is inspired by Spanish art and culture. With a transformative space that has flexible display cabinets that can be detached to open up the space and convert it to a stage for performing arts, this area focuses on featuring art from upcoming arts in Spain.
New York Premium space
The Barcelona Exhibition Space

A rustic multipurpose transformational space that has display units that can be detached when needed. The space acts primarily as an exhibition gallery and doubles as a large stage for various performances.

New York contemporary space

This space at the end of the store has a huge interactive wall. The screens recreate the magic of New York, with the sound of honking taxis, the busyness of Times Square and the magic of the billboards and broadway. So, when customers are walking around the store, it makes them feel like they are in New York. The screens are also motion sensor controlled. So when people walk close to it, it switches to offer three types of activities that they can participate in.

The first screen lets people take a virtual tour of limited exhibits from MoMA, NYC.

The second screen lets people recreate masterpieces.

The third screen let's customers create their own artwork and have them printed on merchandise that can be used as souvenirs, or gifts..

Process & My contribution

We started off with doing a bit of research about the values of MoMA and how we could incorporate a bit of both the iconic cities. We decided to use their common connection of art and culture as the core theme for this store. I worked on the various experiences that users (art lovers- local and tourists) would enjoy in this space. By doing some research about technology, I was able to put together ideas to make it an interactive environment. The idea was also to simplify art for people and offer a platform for upcoming artists to showcase their talent. I worked on the user experience, layouts, materials, technical drawings , branding and developed a bit of the initial 3D on sketchup.
